Team Psycho storms triathlon world championship

EDMONTON, Alberta – Athletes from Team Psycho, one of the world’s most elite triathlon teams, took two medals (a Silver and a Bronze), at the recent ITU Triathlon World Championship held July 21-22 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The ITU World Championship is an Olympic distance triathlon race consisting of a 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike and 10 kilometer run.

Team Psycho was well represented in the race, with six athletes competing. None finished lower than the top 25% in their respective age groups. Over 1500 athletes from 50 countries competed in age-group categories, after qualifying at their respective national championships.

Here’s how the Team Psycho competitors fared in Edmonton:

  • Christoph O’Donnell took the Silver Medal for second in the male 20-24 category, with an astonishing time of 1:58:18. Although scoring is tallied only within age groups, Christoph’s time would have placed him sixth overall amongst competitors in all age categories. Christoph graduated this past June from Harvard University, where he ran Cross Country. He will be turning pro later this month, as he begins his preparation to qualify for the US Olympic Team in Triathlon at the 2004 Games in Athens.
  • Courtney Bennigson (Cross Country All-American at Williams College) managed the second fastest run split in a closely fought battle in her age group, but ran out of course before she could chase down third place. She finished fourth among women aged 20 to 24 – just six seconds behind the Bronze Medal, with a time of 2:10:36. Courtney will be moving to Colorado Springs later this summer (site of the U.S. Olympic Training Center), where she also plans to begin preparations to qualify for Athens in 2004.
  • Amy Cashion took the Bronze Medal for third in the female 30-34 category with a time of 2:11:24, and the second fastest bike split in her age group.
  • Don Alden took a highly respectable 16th (among 56 participants) in the closely contested male 40-44 age group, with a time of 2:07:38.
  • Donna Smyers took seventh from among 45 women competing in the 40-44 category, with a time of 2:21:14. Donna is the older sister of Ironman winner, Olympic Trials competitor, and fellow Team Psycho triathlete Karen Smyers.
  • Roger Little took fifth from among 39 competitors in the male 60 to 64 age group, with a time of 2:25:43, clocking the second fastest run split in his category.
